Why Pack 986

More than a meeting. A community.

We're not just another after-school activity. Pack 986 is a close-knit family of scouts and parents who grow together through adventure, service, and shared values.

Outdoor Adventure

Camping, hiking, and nature programs that unplug kids from screens and connect them to the world around them.

Real Friendships

Your scout will build lasting friendships with kids who share their interests. And parents make friends, too.

Earn & Achieve

Scouts earn badges, rank advancements, and awards that celebrate growth in character, skills, and leadership.

Family First

Scouting is a family experience. Parents and siblings are part of the journey, not just spectators on the sideline.

Before you sign up

Scouting is a family commitment.

Pack 986 is 100% run by volunteer parents, there is no paid staff. That's what keeps it special, and it's also why we're upfront about what we ask of every family.

Every family is required to participate, not just drop off & pick up.

How we show up

Five things we all do.

These aren't rules, they're how we keep our Pack strong, fun, and worth being part of.

01

Model Scout values

The Scout Law isn't just for the kids. Parents set the tone at home and at events, modeling the values we want our scouts to live by.

02

Read & respond

When the Pack sends a message, give it a read. When we ask a question, reply when you can. Good communication keeps everything moving.

03

Unplug outdoors

Phones down at outdoor events. We want scouts fully present with nature, their friends, and the experience in front of them.

04

Pitch in

See something that needs doing? Grab a chair, a trash bag, a tent pole. When everyone helps, nothing feels heavy.

05

Respect our volunteers

Every leader is a volunteer parent giving their time. A little patience and gratitude go a long way.

Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know before joining Pack 986.

If I can't volunteer, can my child still participate?
We understand that everyone's circumstances are different. However, in Pack 986, we place a strong emphasis on parental involvement through volunteering. Unfortunately, without a commitment to volunteer, it may not be possible for your child to fully benefit from what our Pack has to offer. We strongly believe in the value of community contribution and ask all parents to be a part of this effort.
I have other children, I'm not well-versed in Scouting, or both parents work full time. Do I still need to volunteer?
We recognize that every family's situation is unique, and we appreciate that balancing commitments can be challenging. However, the success of our Pack heavily relies on the active participation of all parents, irrespective of their other commitments or familiarity with Scouting. Many of our parents are also juggling multiple responsibilities, yet they have chosen to make Scouting a priority for their family. Everyone contributes to the best of their ability, and we are always here to support one another. Your volunteering, no matter how small it seems, can make a big difference in our community.
What makes this Pack different from others?
Pack 986 was established out of a desire for a more engaged, community-oriented approach to Scouting. We believe in modeling the character-building values we teach our Scouts. While we are all volunteers, this is more than just a service, it's a commitment to our children's growth and development. This Pack may not be the right fit for everyone, so we ask that you consider the time and commitment required before applying.
What kind of activities do the Scouts participate in?
Our Scouts participate in a wide range of activities that promote character, service, citizenship, and personal fitness. These include hiking, camping, community service projects, fundraising, and other fun and educational activities.
Is it necessary to attend every meeting?
Yes, regular attendance at meetings is an integral part of Scouting. While we understand that scheduling conflicts may arise occasionally, consistent participation is essential for your Scout's progression and for fostering a sense of community within the Pack. In the event of unavoidable absences, it's important that missed lessons are completed independently to ensure your Scout stays on track with their adventure badges and is prepared to move up to the next rank by the end of the year.
Can you explain the difference between dens and packs?
Dens are smaller groups within the Pack, organized by grade level. The Pack comprises all these dens.
How many Scouts are in each den?
Den size can vary, but we aim to keep it to a maximum of 8 kids for a manageable and effective learning environment.
If a den is full, can my child still participate?
Absolutely! If a particular den is full, we can accommodate by creating additional dens for each grade level. As a parent, you would need to take on the role of a den leader, but rest assured, you'll be supported by other den leaders throughout your journey.
Is participation in the popcorn fundraiser mandatory?
Participation in our annual popcorn fundraiser is a key part of our Pack's activities, as it supports many of the programs we offer throughout the year. We understand that everyone has different circumstances, however, we kindly request all members to contribute to this important initiative. Not only do many Scouts find it fun, but your participation directly impacts the quality and diversity of the experiences we can offer. Please note that if you choose not to participate, the Pack may be unable to subsidize your Scout's participation in certain activities.
Who organizes the meetings and activities?
Our Pack is run entirely by parent volunteers. Every meeting, event, or activity is planned and executed by these dedicated individuals. This commitment is an integral part of what makes Pack 986 a thriving community.
What is the cost to join?
Joining our Pack involves a two-part application process that includes fees for both our local Pack and the National BSA organization. The Pack fee is $100 and National BSA requires dues of approximately $160. If you take on a den leader role, the Pack covers your annual dues and reimburses the one-time background check and fingerprinting fee.
How do I join?
You can join by applying at our "Joining Day" event, typically held in early Fall. If you're unable to attend this event, please come to our monthly parent meeting to submit your application.
